Healing Communication and Mama Love News

Call of the Heyoka, © 2014 Sheryl Karas

Happy May!

This has been a very busy time period for Sheryl in regards to art. She’s participating in four shows in Chico at once right now, three of them juried, one an internationally juried show. And she’s even sold two pieces. Pretty fun and exciting! That means our minds haven’t been on promoting our businesses as much. . . but you didn’t want so much email in your inbox, did you?

Interestingly, the two pieces that sold were visual expressions of spiritual ideas so the newsletter this month is about one of those: the Heyoka or sacred clown, (see photo above).

Call of the Heyoka

The Heyoka play a special role for the Lakota tribe, one of the native tribes of the Great Plains in the United States. In Sheryl’s painting a couple (I guess you could say that personally represents the two of us), rides a horse backwards over mountains in the sky. The Heyoka ride horses backwards or behave in other backwards ways to satirize social conventions and make people think about what they are doing. They joke around but also have a serious role to play. They ask difficult questions or say things other people are afraid to say. Their work is healing—they make people laugh during hard times—but they also make people think. “Is this the way I mean to be going? (Is my horse going in the right direction?) Should I really be believing my fear or shame based beliefs? Are the rules I’ve been living by healthy ones? Is it time to re-examine the way I’ve been doing or thinking about things?”

Big questions!

The Heyoka is also sometimes thought to have something in common with The Fool or Jester in the Tarot. The Fool is so busy looking skyward to Heaven that he is dangerously close to walking off the edge of a cliff. Luckily, he is protected by a faithful little dog who nips at his heels and warns him to get out of harm’s way. In Sheryl’s painting the dog is represented in some respects by a safety net. Some might argue that such a net could get in the way of flying—and to some extent it does. But, as many of our clients know, we don’t advocate ungrounded spiritual practice. We’re too intellectual and practical for that! The Fool, however, is a positive card most of the time. It doesn’t mean you are being foolish. It means the time is right to go on an adventure, to try something different, do something new. But make sure you pay attention to where you are going while you attempt to get there!

By the way, Sheryl's original painting above has already sold but prints are available in our Etsy shop.

Year of the Horse - February 2014

Spirit Horse, © 2013 Paul Hood

Gong Hey Fat Choy! Happy Chinese New Year!

It is the beginning of the Year of the Wood Horse. Awesome. Wild, free and powerful, the Horse Year is considered lucky in Chinese Astrology. It's a time when the desire to break free of vexing situations will either lead to an abundance of energy to make change —sometimes fast and often furious— or conflict if that urge to be free is challenged or pushed away. It is, however, a time to be quite deliberate and cautious. Too much impulsiveness can make this year a bit of a wild card. Be careful not to party too hard and go running off half-cocked in the wrong direction!

But what if you're ready to make a change, ready to try something new, but feel fearful about taking the leap? (Because leaping WILL be required in the Year of the Horse if you are deliberate about where you want to leap to!)

Well, a spiritual counseling session (or two) with one or both of us can help! We can help you gain clarity about choices you want to make, have a broader perspective on the issues involved, be aware of pitfalls you can work with and forces beyond your control to expect, and how to choose wisely. What’s in the highest benefit for all concerned? That’s what we’re known for.

Hope to talk with you soon!

What is Spiritual Counseling?

© Copyright 2013 Paul Hood
Happy Fall, Everybody!

This month we thought we'd get back to basics. We're spiritual counselors but we've come to realize that a lot of people don't know what that is. . . or at least what it is that we do. So let's answer that question for those who you who might be wondering.

WHAT IS “SPIRITUAL COUNSELING”?

For us, spiritual counseling has evolved into a combination teaching/counseling session. We work one on one or the two of us with one client or a couple in private where people can share their deepest struggles, hope and dreams. Many of our sessions look a lot like conventional counseling sessions: we listen like good counselors ought to, ask questions and help people come to their own understandings. But we also stop to ask for guidance, sometimes once, sometimes several times, and the guidance we receive helps us focus like a laser beam on what will move our clients forward most. Sometimes that is more counseling; other times a session becomes more like a class with us sharing tools and techniques and various bits of knowledge we believe will be of benefit. Most of all, we bring our authentic selves—Paul’s wild sense of humor and our combination of eclectic spiritual focus, educational background and lessons from our own life experiences into the mix.

That includes the bad stuff, the hard lessons learned, as well as the triumphs and positive tales to tell. People who find themselves a great fit for our practice love this. They come to us because of it and some come again and again so they can take our support with them on their own interesting and challenging rides. Our clients include other healers and counselors (both alternative and conventional), people who believe strongly in personal growth employing a more open spiritual point of view than the norm, people dealing with fairly conventional problems related to relationships, careers and decisions they're trying to make, and people who have challenges of a more spiritual nature and need a set of kindred spirits to buoy them along.

You'll find extensive biographical information and descriptions of how we work and what problems we address on our website at www.healingcommunication.com. We also have a lot of articles online (www.healingcommunicationnews.blogspot.com/) and even some videos (www.youtube.com/user/healerteam). If you’re still curious about who we are and how we do what we do, feel free to send us an email.

Want to set up a session? That's easy! Write to us and suggest a couple of times that might work for you. We can meet in-person in Chico, CA or via Skype video or telephone anywhere in the world. We're available these days Friday, Saturdays and Sundays in the afternoons and evenings (Pacific Standard Time) and many evenings throughout the week. We typically schedule sessions at least 48 hours ahead. After you set up a session, pay us to confirm it, provide us with a phone number or Skype address and we'll call you at the appointed time. Information about our fees and a link for paying for sessions is here:

April Healing Communication News 2013

© Copyright 2013 Paul Hood
Hi Everybody,

Happy Spring. Have you been feeling renewed energy for change and transformation? It's been fits and starts for us the last couple of months -- lots of unexpected change with illness (we're now both well, thanks) and computer glitches but things are starting to turn around. Sheryl -- the newsletter sender -- got a new computer and all hell broke loose for awhile. But, she says, it is SO great to finally join the 21st Century with plenty of RAM and all her computer programs up to date (or close enough for now).

Another new thing for Sheryl and her Mama Love flower essence aromatherapy business is a new line of unscented flower essence sprays. These sprays, so far, address the same issues her old line does minus the essential oils but the decision does lead to many new ideas about potential new products. Animal formulas top the list, also some for workaholism and its polarity (repressed motivation). She's looking for suggestions for healing topics that address a wide enough segment of the population to be applicable for a ready-made product list. You'll find her new unscented sprays at the bottom of this page: http://www.healingcommunication.com/mamaloveproducts/Products.html. They'll be available at wholesale prices for stores and those who can afford to buy in bulk -- just ask if it turns out that the "wholesale" webpage isn't updated yet.

-------UPDATE------
Apparently at least one person was confused enough about this last paragraph to write to me. Figured I better clarify this for everyone else: I don't make anything out of anything but certified organic botanical ingredients--I won't be making anything out of animal products. I plan to make flower essence products for pets! And I'm not doing scentless aromatherapy. I have been combining flower essence therapy with aromatherapy but for the scentless products I am doing straight flower essence therapy -- no essential oils. The reason I'm choosing to do scentless products in addition to my original product line is that despite what we in the industry believe is true about the safety and inherent value of aromatherapy... chemically sensitive people who have been frightened through past experience to avoid scents and those who care about them want scent free alternatives no matter what anyone says. Also some people don't want to smell like a rose or patchouli or whatever I decide to use but still want the benefits. My flower essence formulas will not behave the same as the flower essence aromatherapy combinations but they do provide at least an alternative some people might prefer to use in some situations.

Sheryl also wrote the newsletter article this month. It's about a spiritual counseling choice that comes up for us and our clientele on and off.

Be well!

WHY WE DON'T LIKE TO BE ASKED TO "PREDICT" THE FUTURE (Revisited)

An interesting conundrum comes up for us as counselors from time to time: what if you could predict the future but the belief you'd have about that future is incorrect? For example, people frequently wish to know what they should do about a sticky problem in their lives. "Should I go back to school, go out with this guy, do this thing I really want to do, whatever it is?" They may want Paul and I to tell them whether or not to do it. But perhaps not for the right reasons. They might not want to know if the risk is worth it; they want to know if it will be a "success." That's a hard call because Spirit doesn't always define success as they might want things to end up.

"Should I go out with this guy?" a person might ask. "Will it be safe? Will we wind up in love, walking down the aisle, happy for the rest of our lives?" We might not be able to answer that right off because the answer in some cases is deeper. What if the most important person to ever be in your life walked in the door right now and you weren't ready because the adequate preparation had not occurred? What if guy #1 (the one being considered today) was a step, a necessary step, to get prepared? Would you go on that date, those series of dates anyway? What if you are essentially “destined” to have several good years together, and then your partner dies? Would you altogether avoid what might be the love of your life?

Here's another one, a much more common scenario in our practice: "I need to make a change! I hate my job. It's a dead-end anyway. I can't figure out how to make a living in my chosen profession because I'm not prepared. I can't get prepared because I'm too busy. How do I make time for my highest callings?" "You need to go back to school" we sometimes say. "But how will I afford it?" "You'll find a way." we say. "There are job training scholarships you might qualify for, Pell Grants if you haven't gotten a B.A. before, other possibilities if you're over a certain age, under a certain age, a minority, etc., etc. But that's not the important thing.

Do you know what you should go back to school for? The answer is NOT just to get a job because who knows where this economy is taking us, what jobs will be in demand and why you may not be qualified even with the appropriate degree. Training might be more important. Exposure to new ideas always is. That's why you should consider going to school. To get out of your own limited world view and be exposed to something new. What do you REALLY want to do? No! Not that one, the thing you're afraid to consider. The one that will take you out of your comfort zone.

But wait! Is that practical? Is it wise to "waste the money" as some people might say on a college degree that won't mean anything when the economy changes again and new economic realities replace it (as is going to happen over and over in the course of one's life)? Or would it be better to at least take some electives in the course of getting the training you think you need to open your mind, to extend your horizons, to get a longer gameplan in gear.

Case in point: I went to school straight out of high school with the intention of creating a career that combined my love of art with writing and psychology, three interests that have stayed with me to this day. But I never have made my living as a fine artist, a writer or exclusively as a counselor although many of my jobs have involved at least two of these skills. Unanticipated things have occurred. I started out as a professional paste-up artist when that was a decently paid job and not a set of commands on a computer keyboard. Overnight that profession disappeared. Later I worked for a book publishing company in the days when small publishing houses that made their owners and employees a reasonable living were considered a "success" and not a liability by the larger multinational mega-publishing houses that bought them all later and demanded blockbusters. You may not realize that some of these publishers were not put out of business by the "internet" as people frequently assume. They were cannibalized by bigger fish for their most profitable offerings and then disbanded.

So how do you plan for sea changes like that? To some extent you don't; you prepare yourself to be able to change instead. That's where inner guidance comes in. Broaden your horizons, try something new and see where it goes. Follow your heart. And don't forget to wake up in the morning with the thought "I wonder what I'll get to do next!" Happy with anticipation.

Hello Everybody,

Sheryl wrote the newsletter today. A weird merging of the political and personal happened this week and she thought she'd share the insights that came of it.

LESSONS FROM UNDER THE VINE

And everyone neath their vine and fig tree shall live in peace and unafraid.

So often in our spiritual practice people look to us for vision, the longer view, and certainly it is essential to imagine possibility in order to be able to create what we require for our deepest well-being for our personal lives and our world. There are times that require hope and change (familiar words?) but then comes the time to get the job done. And that can only happen when we can get the obstructionist aspects of ourselves out of the way or at least willing to cooperate!

Yeah, I know it sounds like I'm talking about Congress (and I am). But let's talk about the obstructionists within.

Have you ever known “exactly” what you thought you ought to do but had to fight yourself tooth and nail to actually follow through? “I believe it’s time for a change!” says my inner Obama. But the inner obstructionist party says “NO! I’m not going to let you!”

So the wars begin.

Once upon a time (and this is a true story) I was a professional paste-up artist. Some of you weren’t even born when cut and paste was actually a career instead of a couple of commands on a computer screen menu. But it was a career and it paid as much in the 1980s as full-fledged graphic designers who know multiple software programs for both print and internet get paid today! I remember when I went to the brand new Computer Museum in Boston in 1984 and saw the tiny “toaster Mac” Apple computer that had just been invented. It was displayed with a placard saying this little computer was going to be the way graphic design would be done from now on and I thought that was the most hilarious thing I had ever heard. My coworkers and I laughed about it for weeks!

A year later I moved to the west coast and couldn’t find a job because in the Bay area that prediction had already come true. My inner activist president said “It’s time for a change!” But the more I learned about the Mac the more I resisted. It was so expensive! And learning how to use a computer and its software was more than daunting. And for what? To do what I already knew how to do already? My inner obstructionist threw down the gauntlet and said “No way! We’ll do without this and take the conservative approach, thank you very much!”

So for the next three years I did try to do without it and didn’t find another graphic design job as a result. I changed direction, decided to apply my paste-up skills to creating paper quilt fine art pieces, joined an artist cooperative in downtown Santa Cruz (Artisans Co-op) and dove into the project of trying to make it as a fine artist. And I might have succeeded IF I had access to the inexpensive print technology available today and could have created prints of my most popular pieces instead of doing them all by hand. But high enough quality inkjet printers were not available back then and, even if they had been, I would have needed at least some computer literacy to take advantage of it.

So instead I struggled along, just barely breaking even on supplies and other art-related expenses while doing co-op shifts for other artists for money to contribute to my shared living expenses. Then in 1989 the unthinkable happened. The Loma Prieta earthquake hit just as I was getting a large number of pieces ready for a show and every one of those pieces fell, the glass in the frames smashed, and all the work was ruined. Not only that, the downtown area of Santa Cruz was devastated. Artisans Co-op was in rubble and everything inside was lost as well. Some of us tried to carry on by selling anything left in a temporary downtown tent pavilion but for me and many others too much was lost. My then-husband lost his business in the quake, too, and I needed to find another way to make some money pronto!

A couple of weeks before the earthquake my husband’s business partner had shown me how to do “cut” and “paste” on the new Mac they had in their office. I don’t remember why but I think I had softened up to the idea of using computers by then. A few weeks later I applied for an earthquake relief job doing graphic design at the Downtown Association. Apple had just donated a couple of toaster Macs for the effort and nobody knew how to use them. They said that if I knew how to turn the computer on and do cut and paste the job would be mine. As it turned out that’s all I did know how to do. I got the job and learned everything else I needed to know with their blessing paid on company time. I loved using the Mac, I learned all I could, and that led to getting the very best conventional jobs I ever had. I never regretted anything about learning to use the computer except how long it took to hop on board.

Lately I've been doing fierce battle with my inner obstructionists again. There are several choices I need to make and various possibilities I could follow but my inner Obama is outshouted by my inner Republicans over and over again. It doesn’t matter that I remember the folly in holding out -- it just makes the battle worse. It doesn’t matter that almost everyone would agree that the status quo has to be improved. Even the slightest suggestion is vehemently objected to and blocked as if Satan had just walked into the room! I don’t want to change! I don’t want to do anything different even though I know I need to! Worse, not even Paul has been able to help me because I don’t want to do anything anyone suggests. Damn it, it costs too much (financially, in terms of effort, or just emotionally) and what if it’s all a waste of time?!!! (At least that's how it seemed until early this week.)

My inner guidance suggested Vine. Vine flower essence is not a flower essence I would ever think I’d need. It’s for people with a strong inner will and drive to succeed. Okay, that does describe me. And Vine people do pretty much always wind up in leadership positions in whatever organization they’re in which tends to describe me, too. But this is where the description veers into another realm. When an out-of-balance person with a Vine attitude gets into a position of authority they tend to force their will on others. They are awesome at getting the job done but they’re ruthless and act primarily on the basis of selfish purposes instead of for the good of all concerned.

When a Vine personality is in control they lead with an iron fist. They demand obedience from those they deem to be their underlings and when they lose position refuse to allow an outsider to take the lead if there's anything they can do about it. They have an inflexible authoritarian mindset, think they know what is best for everybody, and will wreak havoc with any institution or person who pushes an agenda they aren’t in charge of... even if it sounds like something they used to say they’d be open to in situations when they were in charge. Again, I know it sounds like I’m talking about Congress but it’s an inner Congress we’re talking about here!

The Vine attitude comes from fear — fear of not being in charge, fear of going through whatever hell a person wants to avoid or whatever hell they've already been through again. In particular, it’s the fear of being under someone else's tyrannical insensitive thumb. A lot of times some incident or longer term condition earlier in life taught them to fear others and seize the reigns of power in order to create the strongest defense possible. The tools they gained can often be used skillfully. For instance, many people who need Vine learn to notice what the weak link is in any situation and how to exploit and manipulate it to their will. Used lovingly and with awareness the same training can be given to the service of helping people and organizations focus on what would make the biggest difference in their situations by mending those weak links (as a spiritual counselor, teacher or consultant in a good frame of mind can do). Vine flower essence helps a person align themselves with a Higher good, their Higher Self, God, the good of all. It eases the great fear a Vine person may have taken on, allows them to relax their inflexibility and allow for input and guidance from outside their more limited point of view.

I grew up with a family member I wished had been given Vine flower essence. He grew up in a very authoritarian household himself in the middle of the Great Depression. I’ve strived to live counter to his influence most of my life but since going through our own Great Recession misadventures I have no doubt how he developed his fear-based point of view. We internalize everything from our families of origin even if they frequently lie dormant much of the time. Like me, you might think you could never be a person who could benefit from a flower essence like Vine... unless there comes a time when your inflexible inner authority figure takes control, attempts to obstruct every move you make, and wreaks havoc with your life.

A true leader inspires the troops. When they supervise a team they look for ways to empower people and help them rise to their full potentials. I decided to try Vine flower essence for myself earlier this week and the first thing that happened was a decidedly more peaceful idea about a decision I was trying to make. Instead of seeing a potential disaster at every turn I suddenly realized without a doubt that if I presented my work in a straight forward way the people who were ready and able to enjoy or make use of it it would recognize that and respond positively. In other words the obstructive pattern I was most recently grappling with just went "poof" and went away! I notice the fears tend to come back quickly so I'm continuing to take this essence regularly throughout the day but I'm fascinated and looking forward to experiencing its full effect.

Hello Everybody!

This Independence Day Paul and I find ourselves deeply contemplating the issue of freeing oneself (declaring our independence and liberation) from self-made chains. The soul has a need for spaciousness but frequently we create (unconsciously but sometimes consciously) work and/or lifestyle changes that serve the purpose of creating that space in a time-oriented way while plunging us into a way too limiting situation that is not in our highest benefit long-term. For example, a person might need time to recover from a sad accident, past mistakes, or unfortunate unforeseen changes in the political and socioeconomic landscape (the Great Recession, for example) that sends them into such a challenging state of mind they just need a break! They get an inadequate but unchallenging day job, a safe refuge, or pull all their money out of their retirement account and just take a time out. But this choice is never meant as a substitute for one's highest potential! And inevitably the day arrives when, to paraphrase Anais Nin, the risk to remain tight in a bud becomes more painful than the risk it takes to blossom.

We get calls and emails on that day. "What should I do? Where should I go?" and the decisions are so wrought with anxiety. "I've been out of the job market so long!" or "I don't know how to succeed at what I most want and I can't think of anything else I want to do." or "I just can't see the road ahead. Can you tell me what to do?"

Since we set the parameter of always working for the highest benefit of all concerned and only doing what can be healthfully integrated, we can't always do that right away. That's because the answer will become clear and more easily attainable when the person has 1) cleared a few cobwebs away through letting go / saying good-bye to the past failures, disappointments and broken dreams and 2) created a space for personal exploration.

This is actually a really difficult thing because frequently they're running out of money or think they have to speed things up in some way. But it isn't true. Scholarships and grants are available for going back to school. Work exchanges for housing are often beneficial for all concerned. There are often bank accounts they have been afraid to tap, arrangements with other people just a minor adjustment in thinking away. Kickstarter projects have funded many a person's dream on our Facebook list. Investment funds are available for all kinds of hopes and dreams.

More important than that, sometimes the mere act of changing the thought " I can't!" into "Other people do, I can, too" can flip the entire set of programming on its head. "I can! And this means... I can take time to make some changes, to take a class, to add one thing I've always wanted to do, to meet with that guy who is doing what I always wanted to be doing, to talk to that friend on my Facebook list." It doesn't have to be a HUGE life-changing decision. But each step opens a gate in one's consciousness and that can lead to some pretty significant changes that a person will be much more ready and willing to do, rather than hearing prematurely from somebody like us the same information but rejecting it instead.

Here's an example from earlier in my life when I was pining away for a better paying job while being exploited as a "freelance" graphic artist, working more than 40 hours a week on site for what was then considered low wages (now the norm in that field) and no benefits. I met a true freelancer who explained what being self employed really meant but I didn't think I could achieve what he did (double the pay, double the respect). Instead I stuck it out until the day came when I couldn't stand the disrespect I was putting up with anymore. I quit, borrowed my brother's backpack, and traveled by bus and youth hostel across the country to take time out for three and half months. On my trip I had my eyes opened to the beauty of this country while meeting wonderful interesting people I never would have met from all walks of life from all over the world. Most importantly, I met several freelancers running a variety of tiny businesses and loving it. And none of them were any more intelligent than me. They all said "Go for it!" They all believed I could do it, too, and I came back and went to work fixing up my portfolio, updating my resume, and cold-calling every graphic design, advertising and publishing company in the Boston Yellow Pages. In three months I had 15 clients, made double the money, double the fun, and felt happy and proud. That is, until the Mac was invented and made the job of paste-up artist obsolete. But once I recovered from the shock and trauma of that (and got a Mac and learned the software) I got a WAY BETTER job as a book designer at a New Age publishing company that I loved. And that led to learning the healing and spiritual counseling work we do today. Who knows what the journey we've been on will lead to from here?

Times change, people change, conditions change. Allow yourself the time to explore and acquire the knowledge or skills to do what you care about most in these new circumstances today. Paul and I have been providing regularly spaced spiritual counseling sessions to several people on our list lately. It's been a true gift to assist them step by step as they clear those cobwebs away and begin to recreate their lives once again.

April 2012 News

Copyright 2010, Sheryl Karas, All Rights Reserved

Hello Everybody,

Hope you had a nice Easter, are having a great Passover, or are enjoying the passage into Spring—the time of resurrection. There are several kinds of resurrection—some involve making a leap of faith, others involve lots of little steps of faith. Believing in yourself, believing in a Higher Power—either way, you must believe enough in the power of something to see your changes through.

Ready to Resurrect?

This is an illustration I did for Angel's Trumpet, the flower essence for spiritual surrender and giving in to the power of the Universe to hold you through intense transitions. People use it to ease a person's passage into death but it's equally applicable to resurrection within any stressful transition where CHANGE is the hardest thing you face. Sometimes in times of great transition it helps to remember to surrender -- to let go, let God. Letting go of your old life, your old patterns of being, can allow you to rise up and be born anew.

I don't currently use Angel's Trumpet in any of the formulas I do although I could add it to a custom formula if anyone is interested. I've used it myself but only during the most intense times when it felt like help had to come from outside ourselves and saying yes to that choice was the best choice available. We lived through a time like that almost exactly one year ago—flying from the Mormon desert to our current home in Chico in a series of hops, skips and giant leaps of faith. Help was given and there were some true gifts along the way but it was definitely a hairy ride!

But even after going through a major transition there is a time when you realize it's time to let go of THAT experience and keep on going. As a result of our last newsletter a couple of people requested a formula I was considering for beginning again with a positive attitude and a product I gave up on during the height of the Great Recession crisis popped into in my head. Mama Love for Renewed Faith and Optimism was discontinued because it just sat on the shelves. Paul thought that was hilarious—"Renewed Faith and Optimism is being discontinued due to lack of faith! People who really need it are so discouraged they think 'it wouldn't work anyway.' People who aren't discouraged don't need it. And you're giving up on it even though it works really well!" We even put the incident in our book "Waking Up in the Great Recession Mormon Desert" (still available free to download at http://www.healingcommunication.com/WAKING_UP_FILE.html )

But Mama Love for Renewed Faith and Optimism does work really well. It smells like rose and cinnamon and contains essential oils and flower essences for alleviating depression and anxiety, soothing the heart and increasing the ability to take the time necessary to begin again with self-confidence. It's great for those who need to muster the faith to start again, especially if the road has been rough and more than disappointing.

And then there is the aspect of working through the issues that come up when you try again. Paul has been addressing some of that recently. I'll let him jump in:

"Recently I did a photo shoot with a young woman who contacted me to help with her modeling portfolio. Seemed like a simple thing, but posting a couple of photos on Facebook caused a minor uproar among a handful of people, even to the extent that I lost a friend over it, albeit not a close friend, but somebody who thought that a photo of a woman doing a classic pose or two in an outdoor setting (fully clothed) was somehow beneath me as a spiritual person. You can’t please all the people all the time. I’ve only ever gotten criticism for doing things which I never thought would be controversial, things which were not at all challenging to my own beliefs, so there’s really no use in second guessing where change and evolving consciousness might take you-- especially when you don’t even think you’re engaging in anything challenging. Sometimes the commonplace is challenging.

"Far more challenging for me was making the transition from photography to fine art. I hadn’t drawn or painted anything freehand in decades, excluding some digital painting, and I began to wonder if I’d ever have the guts to pick up a paintbrush. Finally I just did it. I took the opportunity of controversy in photography to take a little break and do some drawing, then digital enhancing, and finally painting. An unexpected benefit has been a cross-pollinating between digital and manual/physical artwork. If I hadn’t experienced some discomfort and controversy in photography, I might not have picked up the paintbrush yet. I can take a photo of anything, it doesn’t challenge me, I have no problems or qualms with that. If a thing exists it can be photographed but for me putting a few lines on a page was a barrier that it took me years to break back through. Now that I’ve started, I am surprised that I’ve been held back for so long".

For issues like this one of my other formulas—Doing New Things with Confidence, for example—might be appropriate. But even better is to arrange for a session or two or even to choose a couple of challenges in your life you want to tackle and stick with the process of working through the issues step by step. We're still offering our services at the bottom of our sliding scale for everyone regardless of income. Appointments are currently available evenings, weekends and two afternoons mid-week and generally need to be arranged two days or more in advance.

Remember that we all fall from time to time–sometimes we even get the rug pulled out from under us or get pushed down. But, as they say, you're only defeated if you don't get back up.

If you hang out on the internet enough you've surely seen the video of Nick Vujicic, a young man born without arms and legs who became a motivational speaker. In one of his videos he demonstrates how a man with no arms and legs gets up if he falls down and talks about everything he has learned to do with this handicap, bringing the audience to tears with his conviction that everybody is worth something and can do things with their life if they choose to! If you need a little inspiration to get started with your own personal resurrection take a look:

March News

Blossoms by Paul Hood
Blossoms by Paul Hood

Hello Everybody!

MARCH COMES IN LIKE A LION

There's a phenomena that happens this time of year for some of us. The sun shines longer, the sap starts rising, and longing to be something, to get things started—to use that increasing energy surge—is all some of us can think about. If you can't go full speed ahead for some reason frustration can set in. If the feeling of being trapped or somehow held back has been there too long... well, March is known to be "windy" month. The inner tensions need release of some sort or havoc will prevail.

But timing is extremely important in the natural order of things. The sap may be rising but it's not quite Spring in most parts of the northern hemisphere. The cherry trees may be starting to bloom here in Chico, CA but it's still freezing in many places around the world. And even in Chico, most of the trees are still bare. Something is stirring—we can see it, we can feel it—but it's not quite time to blossom and nowhere near time to bring forth fruit. Force the issue and a big winter storm will likely take out your hard work and effort. Better to start experimenting, perhaps dust off that business plan and add an addition or two, try a few ideas on for size, than to go whole hog into some half-baked plan that isn't ready to come out into the world quite yet. (How many metaphors can I use in one newsletter?! I think I'm done.)

If this description of wanting-to-go but haven't gotten your ducks in a row yet (oh God, another metaphor) applies to you, you may be dealing with a lot of inner turmoil and, perhaps, contributing to a little outer turmoil in your personal microcosm of the natural world. That's where a little flower essence aromatherapy mixed with spiritual counseling... and perhaps a plan of action to start paying attention to... could do you a lot of good.

For my part, I'm starting to develop some new Mama Love flower essence aromatherapy formulas. I'm working with a formula I'm calling "Soothing the Angry Heart" which addresses the underlying grief, discouragement, and anxiety that usually fuels anger and frustration. So far, It's doing ME a lot of good! I'm also hoping to do one for bringing forth the Inner Warrior (for those who actually need to stand up for themselves in order to take challenging steps) and one called Beginning Again (for renewed faith in yourself, optimism despite setbacks, and willingness to try again).

None of these are quite ready for prime-time yet... and I'd like to do one or two more. A couple of friends on my Facebook list suggested "Aging Gracefully, Powerfully and Well". Any other suggestions or special requests?

January 2012 Newsletter

"Soar!" by Paul Hood, Copyright 2011

Happy New Year! Happy 2012 to all of you!

As we head into the new year a lot of people's thoughts turn naturally to what 2012 will bring. The end of the Mayan calendar has a lot of people worried -- we're not among them -- but Sheryl, for one, does anticipate a great year of possibility. As ALL years / days are, of course! Every moment is a potential beginning. But human beings do tend to organize ourselves by the calendar, and collective beliefs and intentioning have great power. . . so what do we wish to create at this time in history and in our personal lives?

Before jumping in it might be worth noting that collectively we'll be celebrating the Year of the Water Dragon this year. Celebrating. Dragon years are often about success and opportunity. Coming together is what a Water Dragon can bring -- Harmony, one of the greatest Chinese virtues, is associated with a Water Dragon year. Other possibilities include conflicts of sorts as some things fail and fall apart so other, more beneficial, changes can take place! If you're part of a situation that has to be improved that's a great thing, provided, of course, that you can go with the change about to come. One word of advice from our own experience of rapidly changing life situations: LET GO! Believe in the possibility of an even better outcome than you can see right now and allow it to come.

We just moved again, by the way. Yes, AGAIN! We're still in Chico, CA but this time we moved to a much larger, nicer place right next door to Paul's dad who needed a great deal of caregiving attention in the past couple of months. Imagine: we all needed a place as close as possible and one opened up by the time we needed it RIGHT NEXT DOOR. We also really needed more space and always like to have an outdoor seating area and close access to nature and we manifested exactly that, too. A nature preserve is just a short walk away and a nice view of the Sierra foothills is practically outside our door.

Back to the coming year: a few shake-ups are likely to occur (as is often the case in a volatile election year) but not without a little fun. Focus most of all on how fun it will be to manifest what we'd like next. And "wouldn't it be great if. . . " Seriously, we don't ALWAYS seem to get what we want. Many of us have suffered great losses. It can be very easy to lose faith and think things like intentioning doesn't even remotely work! But sometimes what we need most takes a certain amount of footwork -- reshuffling the deck (which can seem almost catastrophic when you're in the midst of the shuffling). But then. . .an opportunity comes along you would not expect that you needed to be in a different place or mindset to accept. A new set of priorities soon emerges, one you would not have taken on in your previous circumstances. Or perhaps you just get to start anew and try again.

The new year reminds us to take time to look back on our lives, assess, reevaluate, pay attention to what has worked and what we'd like to do differently, to imagine what we'd like next, and intend it to come forth. A little advance planning, goal-setting and following through is often beneficial but don't be at all surprised if a lot of things just make sense to do-- like getting up every day anticipating positive shifts and intending the best all along the way.

-- Sheryl Karas, January 2012

–––––––––––

JUST FOR FUN: a recent example of instant manifestation Paul shared on Facebook this week. In his words:

"Things we've said this week: 'We should get another of these white plastic lawn chairs to go on the front porch. . . was nice to get that stereo as a gift, but I wish the interface was more user friendly. . . well, that plunger with the weird clear plastic handle barely worked, what's wrong with a plain wooden handle (me) and we should probably have a toilet plunger (Sheryl).' So on a short drive today we were given a white plastic lawn chair, drove a little further and saw two plungers on the sidewalk-- a regular and a toilet plunger (both with wooden handles) -- and when I pulled over there was a stereo receiver right next to me with nice simple buttons (Fisher RS 605, circa 1988). Crankin' the tunes right now in my headphones."

October News

Hello Everybody,

What an interesting month October is turning out to be! The month of Libra (the scales of justice) has brought needed attention to the plight of the 99% of Americans who are not millionaires and especially to their children (and many others) who have been struggling in this Great Recession economy. The scales of justice carries a sword but to their credit the vast majority of the Occupy Wall Street protesters have managed to remain peaceful and nonviolent in demonstrations all across the country and around the world. Paul and I have been very engaged in supporting the efforts to get the word out about what's been happening online on our Facebook pages and individual blogs. Both having been real journalists ourselves it has felt essential to counter news blackouts, misleading reporting and sometimes outright lies with reports, videos and photographs from people in the thick of things. It's also been very inspiring because the coming together as a response to corporate and political corruption we're seeing today was predicted in our book (although we had NO idea of the form it would take).

We know many of you read this newsletter (if you do) most often because of the spiritual nature of what we most often try to present. But we believe this IS a spiritual happening unfolding and feel so strongly about the importance of this that we want to give away the PDF download version of "Waking Up in the Great Recession Mormon Desert" FOR FREE to anyone who wants it. The print version and Kindle and Nook versions are still for sale but we want to see the message in this book carried far and wide so get yours by clicking here and send this link to anyone you think might be interested: http://www.healingcommunication.com/WAKING_UP_FILE.html

No additional articles this month. The book IS the article. Enjoy it!

Thanks!

Sheryl and Paul

SESSIONS

We're continuing to offer everyone an opportunity to work with us at the bottom of our sliding scale. We also have 1/2 length sessions and short email consultations to make our services affordable and accessible.

Sheryl also has been trying something out through her Mama Love shop on Etsy she'd like to extend to everyone on our list: Flower Essence readings via email! What's a "flower essence reading"? Dowsing for guidance using the Flower Essence Repertory by the Flower Essence Society as a guide! Seriously. Sheryl's been designing formulas like this for years. And gets lots of insight and help for other people now as well. Try it! Find out what the "flowers" have to say for your highest well-being. A flower essence reading alone costs $15. A reading with a related Mama Love perfume (1 dram) is $25. If you'd prefer a custom made 1 oz formula along with the reading it will cost $32.

You can also do a session with Paul and ask for a flower essence formula from Sheryl to take the healing further. Similar costs apply.

September Newsletter

Santa Cruz Lighthouse by Paul Hood

Hello Everybody,

Happy Labor Day! Hope your weekend was a good one. Ours was filled with lots of art and talk. Our latest art pieces from this weekend are in this newsletter. Enjoy!

---------------------------------

FINDING A NEW WAY

An interesting theme presented itself -- rather “insisted” itself -- to us this month. Insisted? Yes. You see, I expected to put in an excerpt from our latest book, "Waking Up in the Great Recession Mormon Desert", about claiming the change you wish to make in your life. (You can still read that one if you like!) It was about believing so strongly in the change you wish to make that you can’t believe you don’t deserve to have it! It was about really going for it and intending, not just wishing, but actually believing you’re going to succeed.

Alrighty then, that sounded like a great newsletter theme but why then, did the following theme intrude itself instead? It popped up over and over in sessions we did with clients, on posts we read on Facebook, news articles, conversations with friends: “I really wanted to do ‘this’ with my life but... I need to take a break from cartooning because I hurt my hands.” “I can’t afford to do my art full-time anymore because I can’t pay my rent.” “My boyfriend left me and won’t return my calls.” “Someone I love is sick and needs me now.” “A hurricane just destroyed my house.” Etc., etc.

What happens to those cherished hopes and dreams when life intrudes instead?

Paul took a first crack at this in a free write recently:

“A friend of mine on Facebook misses being a cartoonist. He said so. Right back at him came an unsolicited philosophical response. I mean, I think he just meant to say what he missed. He didn’t want a suggestion, or an answer, but here one came. Worse yet, it sounded very close to Yoda’s “Do or do not, there is no try” from the old Star Wars movie. So my friend answered pretty politely at first, but when that didn’t get through: “Your Yoda platitudes sound nice and simple, but they are too simple.” Because my friend has a repetitive motion injury specific to drawing. He can do everything else, just not that. Not for awhile anyway. But he misses it, and that’s all he wanted to say. Doing a lot of drawing made him have to stop doing that one thing that he really liked, and there was likely no way around that. There’s not much you can say and he wasn’t asking for anyone to say anything. Maybe we should really telegraph it when we’re feeling that way, like “I don’t want anyone to answer, I’m just going to announce something.“ And I think that would work, because people always want to help, and sometimes we don’t want them to.

Later on in the day I walked outside just after a car crash occurred several yards from my house. Those involved weren’t even out of their cars yet. It was a rear end collision; hit hard enough to push that car into the car in front but nobody was injured. The responsible party was pretty upset, started to cry a little. Everybody had their cell phones out, so we knew help was on the way. It was all women there. A young woman from one of the cars that had been hit walked over to the woman who had hit the other cars, put her hand on her shoulder and said, “It’s OK. It’s just cars.” I think that did help. It helped me. I wanted to see and hear that, and know how amazingly civilized people can be.”

I recently received a newsletter discussing the importance of not resisting what is. Sure, you might want things to be another way and it’s perfectly okay to admit it. But sometimes the most important thing to come out of a bad situation is recognition of what’s essential, what’s really most important to us after all. You know, “it’s ok, it’s just cars.” We’re alive and well, that’s the important thing!

That doesn’t mean that those cherished hopes and dreams are a mistake, but maybe the most important things are to cherish what you have today, to accept what’s happening now and build (or rebuild) from there, or to decide to do something that helps you bring more of what you’re capable of to the forefront. Something you’d never choose if the doors you wished were open weren’t closed to you right now. Life gets more interesting with a little rediscovery and redirecting. Sometimes the undiscovered territory ends up being the most interesting place to be of all.
