July 2017 Healing Communication / Mama Love News

Hello Everyone!

Hope you’re enjoying a healthy and positive Independence Day weekend! I had a life-changing set of experiences this last month that started with gaining independence from a limited mindset so I thought I’d share that story with you! Hope it helps you take heart with whatever you might be wanting to create for yourself.
Sheryl (and Paul)

USING MANIFESTATION TOOLS WHEN YOU'VE BECOME DISCOURAGED

Author Marc Allen is on my Facebook friends list. You may or may not know his name but you certainly know his work. He and his good friend Shakti Gawain started the New World Library book publishing company and have written many many books on spirituality, manifestation and creative visualization. What he shares on Facebook is pretty much the same and, honestly, I had not been paying much attention to it —my attention online is typically obsessed with politics and attempting to distract myself from it. But a few weeks ago something he shared caught my attention and hit me hard!

He said that when you do affirmations — (which I had stopped doing) — to try adding the phrase “in a relaxed and easy fashion” to contradict any conscious or unconscious belief that what you want to have happen will be difficult. He said this was ESPECIALLY important when 1) society wants you to believe it is difficult (my examples: making a living as an artist, affordable healthcare for all) or 2) when your own life experience (losses, defeats) has reinforced your less than positive beliefs or changed your beliefs for the worse over time.

At that point I had been looking for day job work with great frustration for quite a while (we don’t make ALL our income from spiritual counseling and flower essence aromatherapy). My biggest requirement originally was that it be work I would love. That used to mean “in the arts.” And I actually DID make my living as an artist at one time. I had a dream job working as a book designer at a book publishing company called Crossing Press, where I got paid to do art for book covers and interior illustrations among other things. But the book publishing industry changed, the world changed, and perhaps too quickly I started to believe that making my living in this fashion would be stressful and hard. I had many other interests—spirituality, counseling, alternative healing—and made the deliberate (and wonderful) choice to focus on those interests instead.

But the world has changed even more since I went in that direction. Agencies I used to work for had their funding cut by 80%, a year after Paul and I teamed up was the Great Recession crash, we moved multiple times, and finally wound up in Chico, CA because his father needed caregiving assistance after a medical emergency and we were there. While we still are devoted to spirituality, counseling, alternative health, and the arts, we went through some pretty hard times and the idea of making our livings 100% through this work came crashing down.

And then I found out what getting a day job would be like in Chico. My “requirement” eventually shifted from “work I’d love” to “work I’d like” to “work I wouldn’t mind doing as long as my boss and co-workers are great to work with.” I also sort of hoped that the environment would be uplifting and beautiful but I was even starting to despair of finding that. After a lifetime of never having much trouble finding work I loved, I was thinking that finding work I could feel ok about ever again, at least in Chico, was hard.

So I took Marc Allen’s advice to heart. I wrote out my ideal scenario for my life within 5 years, started doing affirmations again and added the phrase “in a relaxed and easy fashion.” I reminded myself that I have manifested pretty much exactly what I’ve wanted in the past and it came easily — sometimes without ANY effort—many times. And finally I sent Reiki to my healing in this area.

Within 24 hours everything changed! After a year of very few interviews and no job offers I had one. And two weeks later I was offered another. Two weeks after that I had two more interviews and another job offer, and this coming week I start my third new job in a month (each one better than the last), and this opportunity is IN THE ARTS! I’ll be working in the most successful art gallery in town, with people I have a pretty great impression of and beautiful work all around. And I’ve already felt inspired to draw and paint more pieces of my own.

Art as a day job. (Or perhaps a career?) Again. What I actually really wanted. Who’d a thunk it?

(If you’re curious about the art I do, I started a portfolio blog at

January 2012 Newsletter

"Soar!" by Paul Hood, Copyright 2011

Happy New Year! Happy 2012 to all of you!

As we head into the new year a lot of people's thoughts turn naturally to what 2012 will bring. The end of the Mayan calendar has a lot of people worried -- we're not among them -- but Sheryl, for one, does anticipate a great year of possibility. As ALL years / days are, of course! Every moment is a potential beginning. But human beings do tend to organize ourselves by the calendar, and collective beliefs and intentioning have great power. . . so what do we wish to create at this time in history and in our personal lives?

Before jumping in it might be worth noting that collectively we'll be celebrating the Year of the Water Dragon this year. Celebrating. Dragon years are often about success and opportunity. Coming together is what a Water Dragon can bring -- Harmony, one of the greatest Chinese virtues, is associated with a Water Dragon year. Other possibilities include conflicts of sorts as some things fail and fall apart so other, more beneficial, changes can take place! If you're part of a situation that has to be improved that's a great thing, provided, of course, that you can go with the change about to come. One word of advice from our own experience of rapidly changing life situations: LET GO! Believe in the possibility of an even better outcome than you can see right now and allow it to come.

We just moved again, by the way. Yes, AGAIN! We're still in Chico, CA but this time we moved to a much larger, nicer place right next door to Paul's dad who needed a great deal of caregiving attention in the past couple of months. Imagine: we all needed a place as close as possible and one opened up by the time we needed it RIGHT NEXT DOOR. We also really needed more space and always like to have an outdoor seating area and close access to nature and we manifested exactly that, too. A nature preserve is just a short walk away and a nice view of the Sierra foothills is practically outside our door.

Back to the coming year: a few shake-ups are likely to occur (as is often the case in a volatile election year) but not without a little fun. Focus most of all on how fun it will be to manifest what we'd like next. And "wouldn't it be great if. . . " Seriously, we don't ALWAYS seem to get what we want. Many of us have suffered great losses. It can be very easy to lose faith and think things like intentioning doesn't even remotely work! But sometimes what we need most takes a certain amount of footwork -- reshuffling the deck (which can seem almost catastrophic when you're in the midst of the shuffling). But then. . .an opportunity comes along you would not expect that you needed to be in a different place or mindset to accept. A new set of priorities soon emerges, one you would not have taken on in your previous circumstances. Or perhaps you just get to start anew and try again.

The new year reminds us to take time to look back on our lives, assess, reevaluate, pay attention to what has worked and what we'd like to do differently, to imagine what we'd like next, and intend it to come forth. A little advance planning, goal-setting and following through is often beneficial but don't be at all surprised if a lot of things just make sense to do-- like getting up every day anticipating positive shifts and intending the best all along the way.

JUST FOR FUN: a recent example of instant manifestation Paul shared on Facebook this week. In his words:

"Things we've said this week: 'We should get another of these white plastic lawn chairs to go on the front porch. . . was nice to get that stereo as a gift, but I wish the interface was more user friendly. . . well, that plunger with the weird clear plastic handle barely worked, what's wrong with a plain wooden handle (me) and we should probably have a toilet plunger (Sheryl).' So on a short drive today we were given a white plastic lawn chair, drove a little further and saw two plungers on the sidewalk-- a regular and a toilet plunger (both with wooden handles) -- and when I pulled over there was a stereo receiver right next to me with nice simple buttons (Fisher RS 605, circa 1988). Crankin' the tunes right now in my headphones."

New Year's Wishes - Jan. 2010

Beautiful music by Libana is featured in this lovely video. Thanks, Marie, for sharing it with us! Enjoy!

Hello Everybody, Happy New Year!

Hard newsletter to write this time around. New Year's eve, traditionally New Year's resolution time. Out with the old, in with the new...when it doesn't feel quite like the previous year is done with its hold on us, not by a long shot yet.

Some people we see on Facebook have been planning rituals to literally throw the old year away -- smashing rituals, throwing away rituals. Perhaps good ideas in the sense of setting an intention that the painful realities we've all been going through as a nation be over and done with. But perhaps a more hopeful agenda might be set if we were to recognize that these harsh realities were a painful yet important waking up, shaking us out of compliance with a painful yet frequently unquestioned status quo. The problems aren't going away if we decide to just watch as powerful interests manipulate the public for private gain, not here, not in Iraq or Afghanistan, not anywhere in the world today.

As I'm writing this I am well aware that most people on our list, including ourselves, have been hit terribly by the economic consequences of our world's previous choices and that, if there's anything we all want to see happen in 2010, it's for the global economic crisis to be set right again. The guidance I continually receive on this is that it will not come to pass until we take our Law of Attraction / manifestation skills up a notch in terms of conscious awareness of how connected we are as individuals to the care of the planet as a whole. The Me Generation's legacy of "me first, mine, who cares about yours" has got to end. If we don't understand that what we do affects the world as a whole soon the whole thing comes crashing down. It already has for more than a few of us already.

One thing you learn when you live way out in the desert is how important the belief is that we're all in this together. Not a day goes by, it seems, when locally at least we don't hear about some effort to help another local family or individual in need. That caring even extends to Paul and me as we walk the dirt roads in the country surrounding our house. People aren't used to seeing people going for a walk this far out in the wilderness -- there's nothing, they think, to walk to! So they always stop to make sure we're okay and don't need help in any way. It's nice. We like that but it pointed out something to us. That never happened to us anyplace else we have ever chosen to live.

We also had the recent experience of having a pipe on the outside of the household water tank freeze so we were without running water for a day or two. This felt traumatic for Paul and me, not used to country living off the grid without public utilities. But we all came through it okay and when free-flowing water was once again restored we celebrated! We were grateful for something we had simply taken for granted days before. Not anymore. Now we know what more than half the planet lives with as a painful reality of their daily existence -- the importance of a roof over one's head with clean, good to drink running water, food to eat, electricity (even if we have to make it ourselves) and the basic necessities of life. We're fortunate to have that no matter how much we may be suffering the loss of other finer stuffs. As this year comes to a close and a new one begins I want to encourage everyone on our list to take a few minutes to be thankful for what we do have and to manifest gratefulness for the necessities of the lessons we've been receiving of late. It helps keep our perspective and the priorities that should be accessible to everyone on the planet clear.

What are we doing what we do for? What priorities do we want to set for the coming year as a planet? We need to allow that to settle into our consciousnesses and then decide what we all want to be doing personally for ourselves and the world as a whole.

BOOKS HAND-AUTOGRAPHED BY THE AUTHOR (Sheryl Karas)

THE SOLSTICE EVERGREEN: THE HISTORY, FOLKLORE AND ORIGINS OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE --
The evergreen has been a potent pagan symbol in almost every culture, from prehistoric Japan to Northern Africa, from Native America to Medieval Germany. The Solstice Evergreen explores the rich spiritual heritage of this ancient symbol in depth and includes a great many myths, legends, and folk tales from across the globe as well as dozens of black and white illustrations. Gathered together in this book for the first time, this rich collection of mythology presents a unique perspective spanning many cultures and centuries.

THE SPIRITUAL JOURNEY OF FAMILY CAREGIVING --
For five years, ending in 2005, I worked as a Family Caregiving Consultant at the Alzheimer's Association and Del Mar Caregiver Resource Center helping families taking care of loved ones with incurable progressive memory loss and dementia. Trying to find services needed to provide basic care is what brought people in to see me first, but as the caregivers became more ensconced in their caregiving roles inevitably emotional and spiritual issues would become their primary concerns. My role shifted to providing a combination of practical and spiritual care. During this period I wrote a caregiver newsletter every month and this book is the result.

Unsigned copies of "The Spiritual Journey" and a nice variety of journals featuring our photography are also available online at http://stores.lulu.com/healingcommunicationpress .

Powerful Beliefs, Intention, and The Law of Attraction

Every time I see a pelican I'm reminded of how things change when a concerted group of people choose to make things happen. When I was a kid the brown pelican was on the endangered species list because of DDT poisoning. I remember being completely terrified by reading Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. She and most environmentalists at the time believed we were doomed and as a very impressionable child I was convinced they were right. Instead DDT was banned, the pelicans have rebounded, and I am no longer capable of believing that the end of the world is around every bend.

Well, all right, I AM capable of it...I get as swayed by gloomy predictions as the next person...but I'm no longer willing to settle for that mindset. In our practice, Paul and I meet people who have been made to believe (and have the evidence to prove it!) that they are not capable of having what they need and deserve to have in their lives--whether that's a healthy body, a decent paycheck, or a positive relationship with a spouse, their families of origin or their kids. And on hearing their truly terrible stories one would be inclined to agree. And yet....very often we see the most miraculous changes occur simply as the result of a simple change in their belief systems. It's as if a switch can go off in our brains that says "I AM capable of having such and such a thing today" and it happens!

I won't say that I've seen "the lame walk and the dumb speak" (yet) as a result of a single change in belief. But we have seen intense pain disappear, new hope flood in, and painful emotional dilemmas resolved instantly at the point when, through a belief shift, the client was finally able to allow it.

It gives us pause because there are plenty of times when Paul and I think WE can't have what we need, when we give up hope (temporarily), when we need a reminder of what we're capable of being. In the healing business the healers get helped along with their clients. What can we say, we're not perfect either. But then a new client walks in, we put aside our own distress for a moment and concentrate on them, healing guidance comes in and the session winds up being of healing benefit for all concerned, ourselves included.

_________________________________________________________________________

The Secret
One of the concepts we've been working with a lot for ourselves and our clients is The Law of Attraction and what I call the Power of Powerful Beliefs, the basic premise of a new movie being talked up a bunch called "the Secret." A great friend recently lent us a copy. Paul and I both have problems with it-- the first half, especially, is overly simplistic and somewhat misleading -- but I think, generally speaking, that it is really good at introducing people to these concepts in an uplifting and, at times, powerfully moving and inspirational way. That's the power of this form of media and that makes it worth seeing for that reason alone. But I have major concerns about the very strong statement made that whenever bad things happen it's because we as individuals attracted it into our lives. That's impossible, my guidance tells me. There are always multiple purposes to everything that happens and sometimes horrible things are there to remind us of the immense importance of what we're really here to do. From a spiritually whole-istic perspective the whole of humanity is responsible for what happens to the human race as a whole. We collectively manifest issues and problems as a whole and work them out through millennia. (We'll have to get back to this in future issues.) But the gist of the movie is that we attract all kinds of things to ourselves and, since form follows thought, we're more likely to manifest happier experiences if we train ourselves to focus on happier thoughts. "The Secret" is available only on DVD or by watching it directly on your computer off the internet. You can check it out at http://www.thesecret.tv/ .
_________________________________________________________________________

The Law of Attraction is at the very heart of what we do on a daily basis. When I listen to clients I am always struck by the themes that repeat over and over in their lives. That's the Law of Attraction at work and it's ALWAYS a glaring red flag as to what they need help with. If they weren't stuck in a particular way they wouldn't attract the same experiences time and again.

How do you heal something like that? Well, first you have to recognize it's happening and take a good peek at what might be causing it. There's always a set of underlying beliefs passed on from family, friends or the societies we live in combined with beliefs we created as a result of unresolved issues in our past. We tell ourselves that our stories -- the ones we tell to make sense of our lives--are the indisputable whole truth and that what happened to us then limits what we're capable of being from that time on. But from our perspective as healers nothing could be less truthful than that.

Sometimes the "conventional wisdom" of society has told someone that "there's no cure or treatment for that" and that's not just a product of the American medical system. Rape victims are told repeatedly that they'll "never get over it." Victims of other crimes wind up thinking that they'll be looking over their shoulders for the rest of their lives. The cure for all these people frequently lies in rejecting the "wisdom." You learn from what happened-- no one over the age of five crosses the street without looking both ways--but you can heal from the most horrific things and live your life freer from pain.

Sometimes you literally have to have faith no matter what other people say you can and cannot do.

Paul wants me to share how I got my first book published because he thinks it's a great example of the importance of belief in the face of nay-saying. And I guess that's the case because I believed in that project completely whereas in other areas of my life, where I had significantly less faith, I have struggled to manifest important things I wanted. Conventional wisdom says it is next to impossible for first time authors to get published and it's a long hard road if they do. But I had my first book, The Solstice Evergreen, published by a real publishing house without sending a single query letter out in the mail. In fact, there were only two publishing people who even read it. Unfortunately, the first person was an agent who was offering a workshop about how to get published. He told me he didn't think there was a market for a book on such a specialized topic as the pagan origin of the Christmas Tree. "Who would be interested in that?" And, at first, I believed him....I mean, after all, I just paid him for his "expertise." He must have known better than me and that stopped me cold in my tracks for seven years. Then I woke up. What the hell? The Christmas Tree is such a popular custom, who wouldn't be interested in where it came from? There HAD to be a market for that. So I went to a mini-workshop on publishing your own work led, as it turned out, by a small publisher fishing for something to sell. He read the very same query I gave to the first workshop leader seven years earlier and said "Wow! I want to publish that." It sold really well and has been in print ever since.

So is that all it's about -- belief-inspired intention? Well, there's also the issue of follow-through. We have to act on our desires, follow our hunches, and learn from whatever comes next. Getting back to the pelicans: It's not good enough that a committed group of people thought it was outrageous to spray poison on the earth and kill the birds, animals and fish. On some level they weren't as convinced nothing could be done as it seemed to me back then or they wouldn't have spoken out at all. On some level they intended to make a difference and they acted on that intention. They shouted out what they saw with the belief that it could make a difference...and, even though the message was scary, their desire to get people to stand up and stop the destruction they were predicting is what made their efforts succeed.

How to Ask for What You Want

George prayed every day for three years to win the lottery, but never heard from God or hit the jackpot. After a while he began to lose hope, but he never gave up his faith entirely.

Finally, God woke him up in the middle of the night. "George, is that you who's been praying so hard to win the lottery?" the Supreme Being boomed.

"Yes, Lord, desperately!"

God sighed, paused for a moment, then said thoughtfully, "George, you have to buy a ticket."

_________________________________________________________________________

What's interesting to us as healers is how often people come to us with problems -- especially on the physical level -- "perfectly" designed to help them experience in material form a thought pattern / belief they don't express in a more conscious way. According to the Law of Attraction we experience physical results of whatever we focus on consistently over a long time. You don't have to be afraid of every random thought--there's a time lag built in to buffer that -- but the chronic patterns, the ones we were taught to believe at an early age and have practiced our whole lives manifest in big ways. As I said before, this can be on a societal level but there are more frequently "collective" manifestations than run through whole families -- even genetic switches that turn on and off based on environmental factors including the emotional environment we live in and how we respond to it. (I've been reading about genetic switches in magazines like "Scientific American.") That's leading to ripples of hope in the scientific community. If a genetic switch can be flipped by the introduction of certain environmental influences, we can learn to switch them back again.

I believe as healers that we actually participate in this switching on and off. The world of psychoneuroimmunology already has proven that persistent beliefs affect the release of certain neurochemicals in the brain that impact every system in the body. Over time this can lead to serious illness. In fact, all the immune system-related illnesses ranging from susceptibility to the common cold to the most life-threatening disorders are profoundly influenced by a person's chronic state of mind. Beliefs are the most persistent of thoughts and that's why the bulk of our healing practice revolves around making those beliefs conscious and shifting them along with the energy healing and spiritual guidance we provide. It's not enough that WE know we can intend strongly enough to override those unconscious patterns. Without the client's increased awareness and participation they can just undo all the work we did in ten seconds flat. And what would be the point of that?

We're all creative and powerful beyond belief and 99% of the people we meet fail to realize that about themselves. That's one of the reasons I so wanted to comment on the Law of Attraction and the importance of conscious intention. It's at the heart of everything we do. And what we help our clients make use of most.
