What’s New at Mama Love? 

Well, the “biggest” thing is a bigger size option for my flower essence dosage strength dropper bottles! I now offer 2 oz bottles as well as the 1 oz size I had before.

I never offered a larger size before because 1 oz of a formula or single essence is usually the right amount for the recommended period of time for use of one month, used three times a day. It’s rare than I have ever needed more than that—I’m more likely to need less. But I can’t say never. 

The idea with flower essences is to take an essence or essence formula until the issue it addresses goes away and stays away after you stop taking it. For long-time chronic patterns you might need to take the essence a little longer. And I’ve noticed that for a few RARE life-long problems I sometimes need to return to an essence or formula again long after I thought the problem was gone! Issues really prevalent in either society or the circumstances you live or work in can appear to occasionally reinstate a life issue. That’s probably because the pattern was such a significant part of your life that it has created a triggerable vulnerability. It’s like a well-worn path that’s just a little bit too familiar. So even though you may have built a nice new roadway that’s so much more pleasant to go down, something happens to take you off course and the old familiar road pops into view.

Larch (for confidence about the future) is the one I wind up returning to again and again. I always have Larch or one of my favorite formulas made with it (“Doing New Things with Confidence” and “Comfort and Joy”) on hand. For me, it just makes economical sense to have a 2 oz size of that on hand. And customers have requested that size for their most chronic patterns, too. 

So finally this month I added a 2 oz option to every flower essence dropper and spray in my Etsy shop. Just pick the product you want and select the correct size at checkout.

November Mama Love and Healing Communication News

Hello Everyone,

A short newsletter this month. I just want to share a story about how I used flower essences very quickly and with great effect in my own life recently. I was working with Wild Oat flower essence, the essence for people seeking clarity when there are multiple life choices that all beckon in different directions. Astrologically, this month is supposed to be a time of great inner and/or outer transformation—hidden things coming to light, confrontation with those revelations, the need to consider one’s path very carefully, the potential for ruin and regeneration on the personal as well as national or global level. We’re in the midst of that already—it started around Halloween. Wild Oat can be very useful in the midst of that as it can help in calming fear, seeing things clearly, grappling with the truth, and choosing a better path. 

Better things can emerge when the truth comes to light. All the truths, even the ones you don’t expect or wish to come to light. Use intention to allow transformation in the best way for all concerned.

Hello Everyone!

Hot enough for ya? Cold and wet enough for ya? The weather is all I’m reading about in my Facebook feed. And for very good reason this week. Lots of horrific news coming out of Houston and Bangladesh and other parts of southeast Asia. Sad sad stories but also ones of hope and inspiration with neighbors helping neighbors and people of all races and religions reaching across perceived boundaries to lend a helping hand. It’s what we do in a natural disaster. It’s what we could be doing for each other a lot of the time.

What Do You Think I Should Name This Formula?

I had a special request for a flower essence aromatherapy oil formula I decided to call “Putting Your Needs First” from someone who was struggling with making time and choosing to follow through on things like going to the gym or yoga class, eating a healthy breakfast, tidying her house, looking for a better job. I asked for guidance on it and received such an unusual response that I figured it was just specific for her situation. But then at least one other person wanted it, too, and I got curious one day and tried it for myself. It’s still not a standard item in my shop — I don’t think it is general enough —but I decided to make it available, made on demand, with a handwritten label. I don’t think that the name is quite right for what it really seems to be for (or, perhaps, who it is for). If you have any ideas on this, feel free to help me out!

So let me tell you about this formula.

First of all, it smells absolutely wonderful with Jasmine, Orange, Ylang Ylang and Vanilla. Those oils also tend to be great for countering depression and lifting the spirits. 

I also use the following flower essences and that’s where this gets really interesting:

ALPINE LILY: for honoring yourself as a woman, especially helpful for having a healthier relationship with your body.

LOVE-LIES-BLEEDING: for acceptance and letting go of the pain lodged in physical world experience. This is most commonly used for grief and for being able to accept and move beyond a feeling of suffering. Given what it is usually used for, it seems like overkill for the purpose of getting the housework done. But, of course, cleaning the house doesn’t have to be suffering! So think of this essence as a mindset cleanser and for shifting from “woe is me” to “let’s get stuff done!”

DOGWOOD: also for ease in living in a body, and letting go of traumas related to physical existence. I always think of this as being for someone with physical distress (physical pain, disability) but it is also useful for anyone resisting tasks of everyday living for a variety of reasons—for example, worry about more “important” things. Dogwood allows you to have more enthusiasm for the practical side of life in a balanced way, being gentle with yourself (you don’t have to be a slave to your “to-do” list) and yet focused.

BABY BLUE EYES: for feeling at ease with yourself, knowing you are worthy of support and self-love, worth taking time for, especially if you’ve had the experience of abuse or abandonment in your life.

Generally speaking, this formula is for people who see the basic tasks of everyday living as a burden. It could be because of past abuse, excessive isolation, or due to the stress of living an over-worked, over-scheduled, overstimulating or overly worried and distracted kind of life.

Happy May!

Hope you’re enjoying Spring. Our Spring is pretty much over, however. Summer arrives in Chico in time for Mother’s Day every year since we’ve been here.

Mama Love has been getting multiple inquiries lately so I thought I’d address some of them here.

First, there has been some confusion about my scented vs unscented sprays:

1) How can aromatherapy products work if they are unscented?

They don’t! (lol) My unscented sprays are NOT aromatherapy—they’re flower essence therapy! In fact, ALL my products are designed around flower essence therapy FIRST. If they don’t work for me and other people that way, I don’t put them out as a product. 

2) What makes the scented products different?

After I design my unscented versions, I find essential oils that address similar issues to add in. This first came about because aromatherapy is much more well known than flower essence therapy and I wanted to reach more people. In fact, I’m sure some of you are thinking what IS flower essence therapy? (I have a ton of info to share on that. Start here if you like: http://www.healingcommunication.com/mamaloveproducts/flower_essence_therapy.html) The main thing to know is that they are unscented and work on an energetic level (at least) to help you shift emotional and mental patterns.

I also decided to add essential oils because I like them! It makes it much more fun! And because some people feel the effect of the oils more easily. That doesn’t mean the flower essences don’t work—it means that the effect is sometimes subtle, building over time, and working on another level. (Although if you REALLY need a particular set of essences, the effect can start out feeling quite dramatic!) 

3) Can I use the flower essence aromatherapy sprays as a room freshener or perfume?

Only temporarily. They’re really not meant to be used that way and tend to dissipate quite quickly (as they are supposed to!). Mama Love sprays are made with safety-consciousness first. (Not always the best “business” choice but it is MY choice.) Some people are very sensitive to essential oils in the environment — I can hardly stand to walk into a Jo-Ann’s Fabric at Christmas time because the scent of cinnamon is SO overpowering. People like to claim that scent sensitivity is set off only by synthetic aromas but that is NOT the case. People can become over-sensitized to essential oils, especially when used to excess. My sprays are true aromatherapy strength to be safe for the average person. (People already hypersensitive to essential oils should probably stick with my unscented flower essence-only sprays instead.)

And one last question about my triple strength products:

4) Are those safe for everyone?

Triple strength products are the same strength as a moderately strong perfume—the 10% dilution recommended for safe perfume use. IF you can wear a natural perfume, check the ingredients to make sure there’s nothing in there you are specifically allergic to, and use them as you would use a perfume (a little dab here and there — not slathered on like a massage oil!).

If you tend to be sensitive to essential oil products, don’t use the triple strength! Try my original strength or go with the unscented sprays.

August Healing Communication & Mama Love News

Howling for Maddy

Tough week, especially for those in our original home town of Santa Cruz, CA. A little 8-year old girl named Maddy went missing, and the whole town got involved in trying to find her. She was found dead, a victim of a terrible crime, and her well-liked and trusted 15-year old neighbor was arrested for it with damning videotape as potential evidence. The shock and devastation for both families—and for much of the community—has been horrendous and all we’ve been able to think about for days.

How do you make sense of such a horrific tragedy?  Is there any such thing as meaningless suffering? How do we come to terms with this kind of pain—our own and that of others?

One person I know, who did not know either family, has found herself screaming in agony. She described it as feeling like she tapped into the collective consciousness of the entire community—or certainly the pain of the mothers involved. I’ve been haunted by the screams of the mothers myself. Many people in Santa Cruz participated in a group howling (Maddy loved wolves) as the full moon rose last night. 

Not able to sleep, all my usual tricks of no use, I finally decided to send healing to all involved, to add to the healing I know was being sent by many others. One of my teachers, Jeanine Sande, wrote on my Facebook page “Love, love, love.” Send love. And remember to be loving with your own friends and family and with yourself.

Another Santa Cruzan on my Facebook feed just a few minutes ago posted her latest gorgeous photo of the sun shining in a beautiful blue sky with blue ocean waves underneath. A typical Santa Cruz day at the beach. It made me feel joyful to see it. It is still the same beautiful place.

That’s the great paradox of the lives we live. The fact is that, right now, there is always somebody screaming in agony because their little boy or girl—their bright shining star—is gone. That has not changed, whether we hear about it or not, that’s always happening. And at the same time, somewhere, the sun will also be shining, there will be waves on the beach, and stars in the sky. And now there is one called Maddy.

We somehow are here to live it all, to find a way to find joy and meaning despite the suffering. And love—to help others and help ourselves begin again when we have to and carry on.

Mama Love News— Lots of New Products

I’ve been busy. Earlier this summer I announced that I was planning to discontinue my healing triple strength perfume balms. That is still true but I’ve always wanted a product line strong enough to be used as true perfume. So I’m now making my formulas available in a triple strength version in a 5 ml roller bottle. Like the perfume balms, these are far less likely to spill. You can easily carry them in your purse and use them as you like throughout the day. 

I still have few perfume balms, at their new below-retail price. Those will be available until they are gone except for “Releasing Worry and Fear.” One of my customers contacted me to ask if I would ever consider making it again. She likes the other versions of this formula but says nothing helps her chronic anxiety like that perfume balm. And I knew that I still had a few empty jars and all the ingredients needed to make some. So that is back in stock! Until it isn’t anymore. (One more batch and my jars will be gone.) But that’s one reason why I now have the triple strength roller bottles instead.

I am also making my original strength formulas available in a 5 ml roller bottle as well. My original 1 dram formulas in regular bottles are still available—I like to pour a little in my hands to rub on a sore back or use for a gentle massage before bed. But those roller bottles are SO convenient, and they fit pretty well on the same Mama Love jackets I’ve been using all along so now that is an option you can choose when you buy them in my Etsy shop (see below).

One more thing: I am making a lot of the ingredients I’ve been using—or planned to use—available as do-it-yourself supplies in my Etsy shop as well. You’ll find a variety of unscented bath salts that you can use as is or with one of my Mama Love formulas for a great healing home spa retreat. And a wide variety of herb tea ingredients for making your own herbal blends.

My Etsy shop is starting to be the main shop where I’ll be selling Mama Love products online. It is the only place where I’ll be selling products I’m experimenting with or supplies. Happy May!

This has been a very busy time period for Sheryl in regards to art. She’s participating in four shows in Chico at once right now, three of them juried, one an internationally juried show. And she’s even sold two pieces. Pretty fun and exciting! That means our minds haven’t been on promoting our businesses as much. . . but you didn’t want so much email in your inbox, did you?

Interestingly, the two pieces that sold were visual expressions of spiritual ideas so the newsletter this month is about one of those: the Heyoka or sacred clown, (see photo above).

Call of the Heyoka

The Heyoka play a special role for the Lakota tribe, one of the native tribes of the Great Plains in the United States. In Sheryl’s painting a couple (I guess you could say that personally represents the two of us), rides a horse backwards over mountains in the sky. The Heyoka ride horses backwards or behave in other backwards ways to satirize social conventions and make people think about what they are doing. They joke around but also have a serious role to play. They ask difficult questions or say things other people are afraid to say. Their work is healing—they make people laugh during hard times—but they also make people think. “Is this the way I mean to be going? (Is my horse going in the right direction?) Should I really be believing my fear or shame based beliefs? Are the rules I’ve been living by healthy ones? Is it time to re-examine the way I’ve been doing or thinking about things?”

Big questions!

The Heyoka is also sometimes thought to have something in common with The Fool or Jester in the Tarot. The Fool is so busy looking skyward to Heaven that he is dangerously close to walking off the edge of a cliff. Luckily, he is protected by a faithful little dog who nips at his heels and warns him to get out of harm’s way. In Sheryl’s painting the dog is represented in some respects by a safety net. Some might argue that such a net could get in the way of flying—and to some extent it does. But, as many of our clients know, we don’t advocate ungrounded spiritual practice. We’re too intellectual and practical for that! The Fool, however, is a positive card most of the time. It doesn’t mean you are being foolish. It means the time is right to go on an adventure, to try something different, do something new. But make sure you pay attention to where you are going while you attempt to get there!
